The roles Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart and potentially Hugh Jackman have to play in X-Men: Days of Future Past have seemingly been revealed. As suspected, those actors could reprise their roles as Magneto, Professor Xavier and Wolverine in the alternative future depicted in the Days of Future Past storyline.
The confirmation comes courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter, which claims "Jackman and the others will appear mostly in scenes depicting an alternate dystopic future, so pay and time commitments are not substantial." That implies McKellen, Stewart and Jackman won't spend much time onscreen, instead making smaller cameos like Jackman did in X-Men: First Class. It's still unclear if other original X-Men actors like Halle Berry, James Marsden and Famke Janssen will return as well.
"There is a lot of willingness to participate because of Bryan," a source close to the project told THR.
X-Men: Days of Future Past is set to start shooting in January, with the film due out in theaters on July 18, 2014. Stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence are all returning.
The 1981 Days of Future Past story by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, which appeared in The Uncanny X-Men #141-142, depicts a timeline created by the X-Men's failure to prevent the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants from assassinating a U.S. senator. In that alternate future, the giant robotic Sentinels have become the de facto rulers of the United States, where mutants are hunted down and placed in internment camps.
